Reason #5: We’re with Margaret and Helen

October 31, 2008

There are so many, many reasons to vote for Barack Obama.

One  is that your vote puts you in company that truly showcases the glorious diversity that is the United States of America.  When Ronald Reagan’s Chief of Staff endorses Obama—as he just did–then you know we are in the midst of something really remarkable happening in this country.

Even professional athletes, a group not usually politically outspoken, is lining up for Obama.  How about Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Charles Barkley, and Michael Jordan himself?

From the people on your block, down the street, across town, two towns over, to people several states over, to people who might have never voted Democrat before, this election has already changed things in this country.  All the big-name endorsements aside, what’s been most exciting to us is the infectious combination of hope and energy so evident among regular folks in the USA–folks like yours truly, hockey moms for Obama.

(Wait. Did you not click on hockey moms for Obama?  Here, try again: this is the hockey moms’ version of Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina Sarah Palin.)

In this election, we feel exhilarated to be part of a real groundswell of change.  From young kids like the Ron Clark Academy kids rocking the vote to grandmothers Margaret and Helen rocking the blogosphere, we’re in good company.

Still not sure who to vote for?  Have we not convinced you yet?  Then absolutely check out Margaret and Helen’s post: If You Are Undecided, You’re Not Paying Attention.

Then, pay attention and vote (for Obama)!

Reason #34: Free Tina Fey!

October 2, 2008

Where to begin?

If you haven’t yet seen Tina Fey‘s brilliant portrayals of Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live, check these out: (1) her first portrayal of Palin, with Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton, and (2) her second, of Palin’s interview with Katie Couric.

What’s so hilarious–but also absolutely frightening–about Fey’s redoing of Palin’s interview with Couric is that in parts she uses Palin’s own language verbatim.  Its so incomprehensible and vapid that its funny as satire until you realize that Fey is repeating what Palin actually said (especially the parts about the Wall Street bailout, and the continuing farce about Alaska’s geographic proximity to Russia somehow constituting vicarious foreign policy experience for Palin).  Then its not so much funny as it is horrifying.

Isn’t Palin supposed to be a hockey mom?  Is she confusing slapshots with slapstick?

In today’s New York Times, op-ed columnist Roger Cohen shares that the “actuarial risk … of Sarah Palin becoming president if the Republican ticket wins the election are 1 in 6 or 7. That’s the same odds as your birthday falling on a Wednesday or being delayed on two consecutive flights into Newark airport.

This is not a risk we can take.  So, hockey mothers and thinking people everywhere—you know who you are, you might even be able to name the newspapers you read–say no to McCain/Palin.  Say no to ignorance.

We stand by Tina Fey who in a recent interview spoke directly to the American people: “I want to be done playing this lady November 5.  So if anybody who can help me be done playing this lady November 5, that would be good for me.”

Tina, help is on the way!  Free Tina Fey by voting for Barack Obama on November 4!

Reason #38: Roe Vs. Wade

September 28, 2008

We need to protect a woman’s right to choose. We need to protect the rights of women to make a “decision” (as Sarah Palin put it in regard to the pregnancy of her eldest daughter). We need to make sure that all women have access to the information they need about sex, reproduction, and pregnancy.

And, we need to recognize, act on, and not pass over the appalling Republican hypocrisy on these issues.

Join us–and thousands of others in this country–by counteracting this hypocrisy. Here’s one easy way to help keep Roe vs. Wade safe for another generation, and then some: make a donation to Planned Parenthood in Sarah Palin’s name.

Any amount will do: $5, $10, $50, $500. We don’t know the genuis who came up with this idea, but so far Planned Parenthood has received $802,000 in donations!

To donate, click here and then check that you would like to make your gift in honor of someone, then enter Sarah Palin’s name when prompted. You will be asked for an address for where a thank you card should be sent. Enter this: McCain for President, 1235 S. Clark Street, 1st Floor, Arlington, VA 22202.

And then spend the rest of the day smiling and continuing to fight the good fight for reproductive freedom, for sex education, and for healthy pregnancies and sexual health for all women in the USA and around the world.

A vote for McCain is a vote for Palin’s Stone Age views on women, sex, and reproduction. Take the worst of George W. Bush and multiply it. Then multiply it again. Then make another donation to Planned Parenthood.

We stand by Roe vs. Wade and thus, we stand strongly with Barack Obama’s policies on women’s issues: read here to learn more!
